Back to School Thoughts

January 3 was the first day of school.  Thanks to Malaysia winning the AFF Suzuki Cup, we were accorded a replacement leave on this day.  This is on account that Friday was already a holiday for us given that the New Year public holiday fell on a Saturday.  Therefore a replacement leave was accorded to us at the discretion of management.  Not that I was at the school overseeing my kids needs.  I gave Aliah the RM66.50 for fees and told her to pay to the class teacher herself.  Zarif and Munirah had already been pre-registered.  January 3 was a day to run errands and deal with matters that should have been dealt with a long time ago.

The day before was registration day for Munirah and Zarif at the secondary school in S2.  Zarif is in Form One this year and the registration process is preceded by a briefing by the headmistress, Guru HEM, Guru Ko-Kurikulum and President of PIBG.  Sometimes I wonder if these parents actually listen to these briefings.  I know I didn't listen much, catching a few words here and there, but nothing that I would remember anyway.
I was more focused on getting the registration done and leave the school.  Munirah, who is in Form 5 this year, had her registration at her class, which was done by MrM.  Trust him to do the classroom registration while I had to sweat it out in the school hall filled with parents and students of Form 1.

I shall not elaborate on the actual registration because I was fuming angry with the Indian teacher who did Zarif's class registration.  In one word, SLOW!  In another three words, COMPLICATES THE PROCESS!

Believe it or not, parents who came much, much later than me completed the registration and fees payment faster than me who arrived at 8am.

Tuition for Munirah was another headache.  First off is finding good teachers who can provide tuition for the three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and both Math and Add Math.  Munirah is to continue her BM tuition with Cikgu Hasnan, who had worked wonders on Munirah's BM.  Physics is just two doors away, meaning Munirah will commence tuition with Fauziah, a Physics teacher at a secondary school in Ampangan.  Munirah will continue Add Math with Susai, also her teacher who taught her Math in Form 3.
Then there is Chemistry and Biology.  Cikgu Geraldine, also a teacher at Munirah's school, offered tuition  for both these subjects but is willing to only accept Munirah for Chemistry since she does take in students whom she taught in school.  And Munirah has her for Biology.

Next is this issue of transport.  Previously we had a driver.  Lan, lasted for two years and left in August 2010.  We managed to get another one, Nazri, who had tendered his resignation in the last week of December.  Therefore evening tuition is definitely not feasible given that we will not be back in time to send Munirah.  Upon finding out Fauziah's son Ersyad goes to Uni tuition for Chem and Bio, I asked Fauziah if she would send Munirah as well when she sends Ersyad.  She said yes.  So Uni tuition it is for Munirah for both Chem and Bio.

We also had to figure out the best approach in tuition for Aliah, whose studies have deteriorated significantly in the past year when she was in Year 4.  For her a one-to-one coaching was arranged which cost quite a bit, mind you.  But if this is not done, I for one will never have the patience and more importantly the consistency to guide Aliah.  Simple fact is I am not a teacher.  Most times I revert to how I was taught and how I understood things, which may be as different as night and day in comparison to current approaches.

It takes a village to raise a kid.  I don't dispute that but sometimes I feel that the village is only the mother.  MrM asks if this and that is taken care of and that's it.  He does his part in sending the kids for tuition and driving me here and there in my efforts to source for tuition classes for Munirah.  But the networking, the calling of these teachers, the registration, and even the payment, I have to do.  I am not complaining of the doing part..  It is just that being the worrywart that I am, I do get stressed even at this simple task.  Especially when MrM is just giving orders around when he could also partake in the entire effort to find tuition for the kids.

Rant, rant, rant.  Today Munirah had her first Physics tuition with Fauziah.  I guess satisfaction for me is when she came home and said "Oh Ma...Aunty Fauziah made it so clear and easy for me to understand..."  That is worth more than every RM spent on tuition fees.

Which is more than I can say about myself and my always not appreciating Physics.  Transverse waves, longitudinal waves, who cares?
